Inside the Living Space
Floors should be made of non-slip materials without edges or corners that could cause tripping. Avoid using thick carpets or split-level floors. If different levels are necessary, they should be clearly marked. Furniture arrangement should consider space for movement, especially for those using wheelchairs. There should be at least 1.5 meters of clear space for wheelchair turns.
Bedroom
Design with ample space around the bed, allowing for easy transfer from a wheelchair to the bed. Include a bedside table within easy reach for glasses, medication, or water. Consider the table’s strength to support weight if the elderly need to lean on it. Install motion-sensor night lights that automatically turn on to prevent stumbling in the dark. Light switches and electrical outlets should be easily accessible from the bed and easy to operate without much force.
Bathroom
This area requires special attention. Install sturdy grab bars around the bathroom, especially near the toilet and in the shower area. The bathroom floor should be non-slip with a slight slope for good drainage. Consider installing an adjustable handheld shower and lever-type faucets that are easy to use. Additionally, provide a sturdy and safe shower chair for seniors who might have difficulty standing for long periods.
Kitchen
Design with appropriate work areas for the elderly, such as counters at suitable heights that can be used while sitting or standing. Storage cabinets should be easily accessible, not requiring reaching too high or bending too low. Kitchen appliances should be easy-to-use models with large control buttons and clear status indicators.
Lighting System
Design for adequate brightness without being too glaring. Install task lighting in areas that need special illumination, such as reading or work areas. Also, include an automatic emergency lighting system in case of power outages to prevent accidents in the dark.
Safety System
This is another crucial aspect to consider. There should be an efficient CCTV and security system, with an emergency alert system easily accessible from all parts of the room, such as emergency buttons that can be pressed for immediate help in unexpected situations. Also, consider smoke detectors and fire alarms with both sound and light signals for those who may have hearing difficulties.
Technology for Convenience
Finally, consider using technology that enhances convenience and safety, such as automatic temperature control systems, automatic lighting systems, or even smart home systems that can control various devices via smartphone or voice commands. However, the implementation of technology should consider ease of use for the elderly.
Designing condos with comprehensive consideration for the needs of the elderly will create a safe, comfortable environment that promotes a good quality of life for residents. This allows seniors to live happily and independently in their daily lives.
